I am a long time Mariner with over 20 years experience of being on the water. I am a multi species angler, outdoors enthusiast who loves to share my stories and adventures with others

Although James grew up in Toronto he left there at a young age with the desire to travel. He found himself in Scotland working on a commercial fishing boat off the shores of Aberdeen. He did not know it at the time but fishing would one day become his passion. A few Years later, James followed his calling again and found himself commercial fishing, this time off our home shores in The Bay of Fundy.

Once again a few years had passed and James took the spring of 2013 to Start a new venture, following his passion of fishing and just being out on the water in general James did the courses necessary and bought himself his first charter boat, Sea’s The Day Fishing Charters was born.

Starting a guided fishing business from scratch with no previous guiding experience proved difficult for James so he was forced to continue to help support his family so in 2015 James decided to travel to the east coast to try his hand as a deck hand of a commercial Lobster fishing vessel.

Based out of Mabou Harbour in Cape Breton NS. For 3 months during the lobster season James was Also lucky enough to get the chance to fish on a commercial Snow Crab boat when a crew was left short handed. Now Captain James was able to add 2 other types of fishing to his ever growing resume of fish species.

James has been a hobbie fisherman his entire life, he is well traveled and has experienced fishing in glacier fresh water of Alaska to the salt waters in the Gulf of Mexico and beyond.

In 2017 James Embarked on a cross country fishing adventure. James worked the summer at a northern Ontario fishing lodge as a fishing guide, then in August through to the middle of September, James traveled from Ontario to Vancouver Island and back, fishing in each province and showcasing a multitude of different types of fishing opportunities that this country has to offer, He did this to attempt raising money through The Canadian Fishing Network for a charity called Feed My Starving Children.

Alothough James took a hiatus period from fishing during 2018 while he was attempting to switch Careers, and looking to be a captian of not just on his own Charter boat, but larger boats as well.

In fact James started working on larger vessels as of 2016 where he worked as a deckhand on the Canadian Empress a 407 Tonne tour boat, that runs out of Kingston Ontario running along the St Lawrence River, through to Quebec City and back. James continued working there and in 2018 became a First Officer ( Or, 1st Mate) for the 2018 season.

Although 1st Mate Mathias had planned on working on the Canadian Empress for 2019 as well, it seems that another opportunity arose early in the 2019 season and James has now taken a Government position as a 1st Officer/Mate, on the Glenora/Quinte Loyalist Ferry boats near Picton Ontario, right on the Bay Of Quinte. James plans to One day Captain the Ferry Boats and possibly the Canadian Empress as well, while he runs his fishing charters on the Bay.

Operating Sea’s The Day Fishing for 6 years, was James coming full circle back to his working fishery roots by merging his dedication as a fisherman, determination of a sportsman, and experience of an entrepreneur to share his passion with all who joined him.

Due to unfortunate circumstances, Captain James Mathias was forced to retire Sea’s The Day Charters in 2017 however it is only a matter of time before you will see this Old Salty Dog back on the water with his clients making another generation of memories on the Bay Of Quinte.

If you Happen to see James on the Glenora Ferry boat don’t hesitate to say hello.
